This series of pieces is inspired by Jihyun’s grandmother’s ritual of placing a small ceramic jar filled with salt by the entrance of her home in South Korea, to block negative energy and evil spirits from entering. The artist merges this widely held belief and superstition in her homeland with the imagery of fairy rings—circular mushroom formations rich with folklore. From these two traditions, magical objects are born.
The piece has a small crack at the base, repaired with Epoxy Saved, which allows for durability similar to firing at 1,250 degrees.
Porcelain.
High-temperature color painting and Gloop glaze.
Fired using the cone method (temperature measured with pyrometric cones).
Dimensions: 16 cm x 12 cm x 12 cm.
