Five objects I would add to my collection

Studio Vanesa Casas approaches interior design through the relationship between people and places. Function, material, light and experience shape a practice that seeks to create welcoming, approachable and sophisticated spaces.

We invited the studio to explore POTT Gallery and choose five pieces that particularly connect with the way they look at design, materials, colour and creative processes.

About the guest

A Madrid-based design studio led by Vanesa Casas and Juan Bueno. The studio develops interior design, temporary spaces, furniture and lighting projects with intention and personality. Its work begins by observing, questioning and transforming places, exploring the possibilities of materials and light while working through reduction and precision: incorporating only what brings meaning to the project.

Testae Blue — Focater [Agustí González], POTT Gallery

Testae Blue

Focater [Agustí González]

We like the way such a powerful historical reference becomes something much lighter and more contemporary. The form starts from an ancestral vessel, but the colour and those almost childlike gestures strip away its solemnity. We are especially drawn to the fact that this freer appearance comes from testing, researching and allowing the process to transform the piece.

Diogenésis 5 — Santiago Sahli, POTT Gallery

We like the contrast between a stable base and an upper section that seems to be eroding. The cracks, irregular edges and change in finish give the piece something fragile and very physical. We are drawn to that sense of an object in transformation.

Blow-up Vase Purple — Willem Zwiers, POTT Gallery

Blow-up Vase Purple

Willem Zwiers

We like the fact that the piece appears unfinished. It is as though the artist’s hand were struggling against the material as it escapes control. There is something aesthetically very interesting in the contrast between its different finishes, the result of the technique and tools used. It is a piece that speaks very clearly about process, and that is something we love.

Block Vase Classic | Large | Pink — Studio Remy, POTT Gallery

Block Vase Classic | Large | Pink

Studio Remy

Any of the pieces from Studio Remy’s Blocks collection appeals to us for two reasons: its monochrome use of vibrant colours and its technique. We find them very architectural, almost like small-scale versions of the marks left by timber formwork on Brutalist concrete. A meticulous yet playful process also allows them to create very different pieces from the multiple configurations of their moulds. Once again, it is the process and the colour that draw us in.

Chartreuse Slump Vase — Philip Kupferschmidt, POTT Gallery

Chartreuse Slump Vase

Philip Kupferschmidt

The first time we saw a PK piece, we were immediately drawn in by the colour. That sense of ‘friendly sweat’ in his candy-coloured pieces set our imagination flying. The traditional vase base, almost as if it had been constricted, becomes playful and approachable through all the toppings covering its surface. What we love about this piece is the contrast between the drops, those delicate dots strategically placed across it, and the reptile-like skin that connects directly with the visual world that inspires his work.
