Single firing

A process in which the piece and its glaze are fired together in a single kiln load. It saves time and energy, but requires precise control of materials and temperatures for good results.

Twice firing

The traditional method of a first firing to produce bisque and a second firing after glazing. It offers more technical control and reduces the risk of defects.

Low fire

A firing range usually between about 900 °C and 1,100 °C. It produces more porous ceramics and allows bright, varied colours in glazes and decoration.

High fire

A firing range generally between 1,200 °C and 1,300 °C. It promotes vitrification of the clay body and produces stronger, denser, less absorbent pieces than lower temperatures.

Vitrification

The process by which part of the clay body turns into a glassy phase during firing. It reduces porosity and increases mechanical strength, adding to the durability of the piece.

Anagama

A traditional Japanese single-chamber kiln, dug or built into a slope. Wood-fired, it produces natural surfaces created by the direct action of ash and flame over long firings.

Raku

A Japanese ceramic technique in which pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing. Thermal shock and the treatments that follow produce unique effects such as crackle and colour variation.

Third firing

An additional firing after the main glaze firing. Used to fix decoration, metallic lustres or colour details sensitive to high temperatures, allowing complex decorative finishes.
